The Riviera Maya is best known for its all-inclusive resorts and five-star restaurants. The food scene is a conglomeration of many different cultures and it won’t be difficult to find your fair share of Italian and Chinese food. But make sure to save some room for the traditional dishes and flavors that are unique to the Yucatan Peninsula.
Everything Chocolate at Ah Cacao Chocolate Café
Mexico is known as the home of the cocoa bean, so sampling some premium chocolate is a must. At Ah Cacao Chocolate Café you can get your fill of some of the finest chocolate products. The chocolate is made from rare varieties of Mexican cacao beans, which have a more subtle flavor than the most common beans. Aside from the chocolate, try their brownies, ice cream, and cake. Their coffee is excellent as well!
Cochinita Pibil at Taqueria Honorio
Cochinita Pibil is a traditional Yucatan meal that consists of pork that is marinated in bitter Seville oranges and achiote, then smoked in a banana leaf wrapping. Go where the locals go and head over to the humble Taqueria Honorio. You can enjoy the pork on a taco or a torta along with a variety of homemade salsas and sauces.
Mezcal at La Perla Pixan Cuisine
The closely related tequila and mezcal are both alcoholic staples of Mexico. Mezcal has a smokier flavor and is usually served with ground worm salt, which supposedly enhances the flavor. At La Perla you can pick from the large variety of Mezcal while listening to some live music.
Sopa de Lima at La Zebra
Lima, the lime’s sweeter cousin, plays a vital role in many traditional Yucatan dishes. One such dish is the Sopa de Lima, a simple yet refreshing soup that is beloved by visitors and locals. At La Zebra you can try this classic soup with premium beachside ambiance. They also have excellent entrees as well as some delicious cocktails.
Xtabentún at Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Xtabentún is a modernized Mayan drink that is locally produced, bottled, and sold. The drink consists of fermented honey, rum, and anise. While it can be enjoyed on its own, the most popular way to drink this honey liqueur is at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya. There they will combine Xtabentún, club soda, and pineapple for a refreshing cocktail.
Tamales at Local Food Stands
Mexico is of course known for its tamales, but the tamales in the Yucatan Peninsula are a step above the others. Some differences include extra fine masa, habanero, and pumpkin seeds. For the best tamales just visit the small food stands of Tulum or Playa Del Carmen, or keep an eye out for a tamale bike coming your way.
Ceviche at El Camello Jr.
The great variety of fresh seafood might be the culinary highlight of the trip. Ceviche is comprised of small pieces of raw seafood that have been marinated in citrus juice. Although it originated in Peru, you can find ceviche on most menus throughout Riviera Maya. El Camello Jr. is the locals’ choice for ceviche. The fish, shrimp, and octopus are all extremely fresh and make for a tasty ceviche.
Pollo Relleno Negro at Que Fresco!
Relleno Negro is a traditional turkey or chicken stew flavored with ground, charred peppers. Don’t be alarmed by the jet black color of this dish. Contrary to what the charcoal color might suggest, the broth is actually quite delicious. Que Fresco provides the chance to try this classic dish while watching an ocean sunset.
Cocktails at Arca
Wherever you dine, you will most likely have the option of adding on a refreshing margarita or daiquiri to accompany your meal. If you are looking for premium cocktails that are a step above the rest, look no farther than Arca. Aside from the creative cocktails, the jungle setting and top cuisine make Arca the place to be.
Smoothies at Nativo
Riviera Maya has plenty of non-alcoholic frozen treats as well. The abundance of local fruit make the smoothies in this region especially good. At Nativo they offer fresh smoothies and juices in generous sizes. Guests can further satisfy their sweet tooth by treating themselves to a fresh fruit bar at Flor de Michoacan.
For an area that is as historically and culturally rich as Riveria Maya, it is only fitting that you provide your guests with a food experience equally authentic and unique. The striking flavors of Riviera Maya will stay with your attendees for years to come.
