Costa Rica is a vacationer’s dream, filled with beauty and romance. With destinations that appeal to children as well as the most adventurous adults, there’s truly something for everyone. Here are 10 of the most memorable destinations to get you started. Go exploring!
Poas Volcano National Park
If you don’t have at least one volcano visit while you’re in Costa Rica, you’ll probably regret it. At Poas, the main crater is one of the largest in the world. If current conditions permit, you can join a hike to the crater rim, which is of course a perfect place for an Instagram pic. You can also stop by the beautiful Lake Botos, contained within an inactive crater.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful forests in the world, Monteverde Cloud Forest is sure to please any nature lovers. This 25,000-plus acre reserve features an incredible assortment of wildlife scattered among the misty green, including the resplendent quetzal. Try the Sky Walk hanging bridges or Sky Trek ziplining tour to get an aerial view of this unforgettable place.
Tortuguero National Park
Known locally as the Amazonas of Costa Rica, this national park is a picturesque array of canals. You can reach it by plane or boat, but taking a boat lets you experience the water birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and beautiful flora up close. If you come in August, September, or October you’ll get to witness the nesting of the green turtle. Tortuguero is a haven for these turtles, who come to lay their eggs. This nesting period is a unique sightseeing opportunity, so don’t miss out!
Tamarindo
Tamarindo is the kind of town you’d want to put on a postcard. Known for being a particularly prime surfing spot, surf culture abounds. Whether you’re a pro or looking to learn, Tamarindo is the place to bring your board. There’s also a great nightlife, with a plethora of restaurants and a wide variety of cuisine.
Arenal Volcano National Park
Unlike Poas, the Arenal volcano ceased regular eruptions in 2010. However, the park still has plenty to do. Particularly noteworthy are the hot springs—what better way to relax? You can also enjoy whitewater rafting tours, hanging bridge walks, and a host of hiking options.
Celeste River
The Celeste River is one of the most unique natural wonders you’ll find in Costa Rica. You’ve probably seen pictures of it and wondered how on earth the water could be such a bright light blue. It’s not artificially colored, but it sure looks that way. A memorable three-hour hike through the rain forest will bring you to this scenic haven. You can’t swim in the water, but experiencing its beauty is more than enough.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park is a beautiful combination of varied wildlife, lush vegetation, and a fantastic beach. You can take advantage of snorkeling or ATV tours, join a fishing expedition, or just enjoy the ambiance. Also consider taking a kayak tour, either in the sea or in an estuary.
Papagayo Peninsula
Papagayo Peninsula is an incredible combination of natural beauty and manmade luxury. This is where you will find some of the best hotels in the Guanacaste area, as well as breathtaking diving spots. It’s also a favorite place for golfers, featuring some of the best courses in the country.
Corcovado National Park
This park has a claim to fame that is truly unique: National Geographic named it “the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity.” If you want to escape the noise of the city and experience nature at its finest, this is the place for you. This is a captivating environment, with no roads or telephone signals. Take a boat to the park and revel in the uninterrupted splendor!
Guanacaste Beaches
200 kilometers of prime Pacific coast is perfect if you’re seeking a day at the beach. With clear waters and beautiful weather, Guanacaste beaches are known and loved all around the world. Whether you’re swimming in the pristine waters or getting some sun on the soft sand, a day at a Costa Rican beach is a good day indeed.
